Natsume’s Book of Friends manga to get a theatrical anime in early spring 2021

Natsume’s Book of Friends: Amazon Japan includes the November issue of Hakusensha’s LaLa magazine with a cover image showing that Yuki Midorikawa’s (Natsume Yūjin-Chō) Natsume’s Book of Friends manga will receive a theatrical anime with limited shows in Spring 2021 and will ship on September 24.

Midorikawa’s Natsume’s Book of Friends manga debuted in Hakusensha’s LaLa DX magazine in June 2003. The 25th compiled volume of the manga shipped on June 5. Viz Media publishes the current series in English.

The manga has inspired six television anime seasons and several OVAs.

The anime seasons and the original manga of Midorikawa revolve around Natsume, a boy who has watched youkai since childhood. Unfortunately, people avoid him and there is no great addiction between him and the youkai. One day she inherits a Yūjin-Chō (“Book of Friends”) from her grandmother.

The book is full of contracts her grandmother made to catch the youkai. When youkai appear after youkai, Natsume tries to rescue or help them, although many of them seek revenge on him.

Natsume Yujin-Cho, The Movie: Ephemeral Bond, the latest anime in the franchise, debuted in September 2018. Aniplex of America released the movie on Blu-ray last November. Aniplex of America showed the film at the NYC Anime Convention in November 2018.

The anime tells an original story based on the Friends of the Manga book Natsume (Natsume Yūjin-Chō) by Yuki Midorikawa.
