The Social Dilemma is a docudrama that will be directed by Jeff Orlowski. Jeff Orlowski is known for making the Emmy-winning documentary titled Chasing Ice in 2012 that dealt with climate change. His 2017 follow-up was titled Chasing Coral.
What will The Social Dilemma be about?
This docudrama will show ex-employees of Silicon Valley giants. They will be seen anxiously sitting on stools and sharing what they feel like and the ethical concerns about the system that they have helped to create. They will be interviewing media experts and former social media engineers. This will include Tristan Harris; the co-inventor of the Facebook “Like” button, Cathy O’Neil, Rashida Richardson, Justin Rosenstein, and Tim Kendall.
The interviews with these personalities will be incorporated with some fictional scenes as well. The scenes will be about a tech-happy family and the repercussions of their online habits.
The story will reveal how social media and other platforms are manipulating the users, reinforcing some interests and views. We will see how social media has impacted young people’s mind, their sense of identity, and self-worth. There have been many instances of depression and anxiety due to the rise of social media. But still, they continue to feed their tech addiction.
What does the director have to say about the docudrama?
Director Orlowski has admired Al Gore’s 2006 take on global warming, which was titled ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ He wants The Social Dilemma to say everything about the dark truth behind social media, making it the ‘Inconvenient Truth of Tech.’
Orlowski has himself been a Facebook addict wherein he couldn’t get off it. However, he still has his share of love for technology and believes that if used correctly, can become a force for good. He believes that the film can’t be a quick solution in solving these issues, but can bring about a drive towards more ethical technology.
The Social Dilemma is scheduled to premiere from September 9, on Netflix.
