Stranger Things Season 4 Filming Locations Explanation of Filming Locations

Stranger Things season 4 contains a number of major locations in Hawkins, California, and Russia, despite they aren’t filmed there.

Stranger Things season 4 has several returning Hawkins characters as well as new filming locations for tales set in California and Russia. While the first three seasons of Stranger Things were mostly set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, season four has vastly expanded the show’s scope. Throughout Stranger Things season 4, not only are the majority of the people separated, but four crucial locations – Hawkins, California, Russia, and the Lab – also serve as characters in their own right.

Stranger Things season 4 features a variety of new settings for the series’ fictitious home base, in addition to revisiting the locales for Hawkins’ suburbs, National Lab, and the town’s graveyard. The scope of Hawkins’ landscape is expanding as well, with Creel House and Forest Hills Trailer Park playing crucial parts in Stranger Things season 4’s Upside Down mystery. Stranger Things’ Byers family, Eleven, and Mike face their own threats in the new Lenora Hills mansion, high school, and ’80s-style roller rink across the country in California. Season 4 uses the environment of the Eastern European setting to properly depict the brutal reality of Hopper’s confinement, although Stranger Things season 3’s post-credits episode gave a glimpse of the Russian jail.

Every Confirmed Character Group & Location in Stranger Things Season 4

Stranger Things season is set mostly in Indiana, California, and Russia, yet none of these locales were used for filming. Rather, Georgia, New Mexico, and Lithuania were the primary filming destinations for the Duffer brothers. Here’s a rundown of all the Stranger Things season 4 filming sites, both new and old.

Atlanta, Georgia & Suburbs – Hawkins, Indiana

Stranger Things season 4 revisits several of the most well-known Hawkins locations from prior seasons, all of which were shot in or around Atlanta, Georgia. Many of Stranger Things’ classic bike-riding scenes were shot in the same or surrounding areas as the Wheeler, Henderson, and Sinclair houses. Stranger Things’ fictional Hawkins’ downtown shots are mostly shot in Jackson, Georgia, which features the town’s library.

The Claremont House – Creel House, Rome, Georgia

Creel House, which has a deep and twisted history in the fictitious Hawkins, Indiana, is one of the most crucial new locales in Stranger Things season 4’s tale. The Upside Down connection of the ancient house, which is named after Pennhurst Mental Hospital patient Victor Creel, provides plenty of unsettling turns in Stranger Things season 4. (Robert Englund). Stranger Things’ Creel House is filmed at the historic Claremont House in Rome, Georgia, which previously served as a bed and breakfast for 16 years. Unlike the run-down Creel House featured in Stranger Things, the historic Victorian home was built in 1882 and is nicely maintained today.

Hawkins National Lab, Emory University’s Briarcliff Campus, Atlanta, Georgia

Hawkins National Lab, a frequently visited location in Stranger Things, reappears in Season 4 for some of the series’ most significant and unsettling revelations. Stranger Things season filming location for Hawkins Lab is the Briarcliff campus of Emory University, which is actually located in Atlanta, Georgia rather than Indiana, as with prior editions. The real Briarcliff [A] Building, which previously housed Asa Griggs “Buddy” Candler Jr., the son of Coca-co-founder, Cola’s before becoming the Georgia Mental Health Institute, has a fascinating history of its own.

Patrick Henry High School, Hawkins High School, Stockbridge, Georgia

The Hawkins High School setting, which also served as a middle school, is again revived in Netflix’s fourth Stranger Things instalment. Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Max, Nancy, and Robin all attend Hawkins High as adolescents in Stranger Things season 4, and the site is significantly more prominent than in previous seasons, especially with important activities such as Lucas’ basketball games and Eddie’s Hellfire Club taking place there. Stranger Things season 4 returns to the former Patrick Henry High School in Stockbridge, Georgia, which served as the filming location for Hawkins High in prior seasons.

Griffin, Georgia’s Forest Hills Trailer Park

The Forest Hills Trailer Park, an Upside Down-infested site where Robin, Steve, Nancy, and Eddie ride their bikes, is another new Hawkins locale that plays a major role in Stranger Things season 4. A actual trailer park in Griffin, Georgia was used to film the fake Forest Hills. While this is the first time the series has depicted a mobile home community, Forest Hills is linked to a memorable scene from Stranger Things season 2. Nancy and Jonathan promptly identified the site as a public meeting place for Barb’s mother, which they were doing to check if Hawkins Lab officials were following them.

Stone Mountain Cemetery – Hawkins Cemetery, Stone Mountain, Georgia

Stranger Things season 4 reuses the cemetery scene from Barb’s burial in season 2, despite the fact that the phoney Will’s memorial took place in a different area. Stranger Things season 2 merely provided us a peek of the place, whereas in season 4, Hawkins Cemetery plays a big role in Max and Billy’s tale. Hawkins Cemetery is filmed near the filming location for Max and Billy’s Hawkins residence, at the Stone Mountain Cemetery in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Where in California is Lenora Hills?

Stranger Things season 3 ends with the Byers family packing up and leaving Hawkins, with season 4 revealing Lenora Hills, California as their new home. It’s unclear where the fictional Lenora Hills is located in California, but it’s thought to be in the Southern California area near the Los Angeles suburbs. The majority of Lenora Hills’ locales, however, were filmed in Los Lunas, New Mexico, just outside of Albuquerque. The California setting of the Byers and Eleven’s Stranger Things season 4 storyline lends itself well to the New Mexico desert scenery, which Netflix purchased New Mexico’s Albuquerque Studios in late 2018, with the California setting of the Byers and Eleven’s Stranger Things season 4 storyline lending itself well to the New Mexico desert scenery. The majority of the roaming shots for the hamlet of Lenora Hills are shot in Los Lunas, New Mexico, along with the setting for Surfer Boy Pizza.

The interior of the Byers’ new home in Lenora Hills, California, was shot on a sound stage, while the exterior of the house was shot in Albuquerque’s Shadow Hills area. The idea to relocate the Byers to a small California neighbourhood for Stranger Things season 4 was inspired by Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Stranger Things’ connections to the legendary 1980s sci-fi film E.T. are even more evident now that the series is recreating the exploits of E.T.’s California neighbourhood through the fictional Lenora Hills.

Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Lenora Hills High School – Eldorado High School

In Stranger Things season 4, Eleven, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle all attend Lenora Hills High School, with Eleven having an especially tough time fitting in with her peers. Lenora Hills High School was filmed at the genuine Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, near the filming location for the Byers’ new house. The location of Lenora Hills High School, like Hawkins High for the rest of Stranger Things’ youth, is very briefly important for Will and Eleven’s experiences in season 4.

Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Rink-O-Mania — Roller King

The Rink-O-Mania, with Netflix’s team entirely dressed up for the ’80s roller skating mania, is one of the most memorable sequences in Stranger Things season 4. The real Rink-O-Mania was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Roller King. The Rink-O-Mania, like Starcourt Mall in Stranger Things season 3, is another example of the series using the decade’s most notable hangout areas.

Is Kamchatka a real Russian location?

At the opening of Stranger Things season, Hopper is confined in a Demogorgon-using prison in Kamchatka, Russia, from which he is desperately attempting to flee. Kamchatka, unlike Lenora Hills and Hawkins, is a real place in Russia. The Kamchatka Peninsula is located in Russia’s Far East, which is separated from Alaska by the Bering Strait. While Kamchatka is genuine, the Russia scenes in Stranger Things season 4 were shot in Vilnius, Lithuania, which was also the filming location for HBO’s Chernobyl. Stranger Things’ Russian jail was filmed at the Lukiskes Prison in Lithuania, which closed in 2019 after more than a century of operation.
