In 1968 New York City — when being gay was still thought to be better held behind closed doors — a group of friends assembles in honor of the sharp-dressed and sharp-tongued Harold for a raucous birthday party hosted by Michael, a screenwriter who spends and drinks too much. Other partygoers include Donald, Michael’s former girlfriend, now mired in self-analysis; Larry, a randy advertising artist living with Hank, a school teacher who has just left his wife; Bernard, a librarian tiptoeing alongside Emory about volatile codes of friendship, a decorator who never holds back; and a guileless hustler hired to be Harold’s night-time gift. What starts as a drink and laughs night comes to an end when Alan, the straight-laced college roommate of Michael, appears suddenly and each man is forced to confront long-buried realities that threaten the cornerstone of the tight bond of the party.
