The streaming giant Netflix started facing backlash in August as more and more number of people using the hashtag CancelNetflix on their twitter and Instagram accounts. Read below to find why this 1.8 billion dollar company is caught in the crossfire.
A petition was started on change.org by Kelsi Swift against Netflix when the latter took on the film Cuties. The film was seen as portraying children in a sexualized manner by the critics.
Cuties or Mignonnes is a French movie written and directed by debut director Maimouna Doncoure. It was released in France on August 19, 2020, and premiered worldwide on September 9, 2020.
The online petition has now over 60,000 signatures. It stated that Netflix is no longer a family-friendly streaming device with shows and movies Like Cuties and Big Mouth displaying inappropriate behavior. The CancelNetflix was the Number one trending topic in the U.S. after Cuties premiered on Netflix on September 9. Doncoure is even reported to receive death threats.

Plot of Cuties
The film focuses on an eleven-year-old Senegalese girl. She lives with her mother and two younger brothers in one of the poorest sections of Paris. She finds her neighbor adult style dancing group ‘Cuties’ fascinating and decides to leave her family traditions to join them.
Netflix posted some photos for the promotion of the film. These pictures were criticized for depicting underage girls in inappropriate clothing and poses and was later taken down by Netflix. They apologized for the pictures stating that they were nor suitable nor a clear representation of the French film premiered at Sundance.
Later Netflix defended the film saying that the film is a satire and social commentary. It makes the statement about pressures young girls face in conforming to societal role models of female sexuality.
