Balwinder Singh Bhikhiwind, a Sikh man who was awarded by Shaurya Chakra for his bravery for fighting against the terrorists, shot dead by unidentified men in his village early on Friday. He was 62 years old.
Balwinder Singh had created a family army to take on the terrorists in the terrorism affected Tarn Taran District in Punjab between the years 1980 and early 1990s.
He was attacked many times
Although, he was attacked many times, every time he managed to beat back the heavily armed terrorists. He inspired so many people across the state to defend themselves against the problems at the times when terrorism was at its peak in Punjab. His village Bhikhiwind was an example and the incident happened in Bhikhiwind where he gets killed on Friday.
However, police haven’t revealed yet who were the men of the motorbikes and whether they were associated with the Khalistani elements. Investigation in the matter is going on.
What happened on Friday?
On Friday, two men came on a motorcycle to his village and waited for the Balwinder Singh where the set up was fixed. The moment as he arrived and opened the gate, the armed men pumped five bullets into him and then fled away. The villagers that were present there, ran to the spot and carried him to the hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
How has Balwinder Singh become popular?
Balwinder Singh’s bravery was so popular that it made it to the international media. He was also featured in the National Geographic documentary. He was awarded Shaurya Chakra for his outstanding courage. The Shaurya Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valor, heroic action, or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well.
Balwinder Singh was a die-hard communist. He was against the religious radicalization of Sikh youth and opposed the Khalistani movement and the terrorism that come up with it. When terrorism was at a peak in Punjab, he and his family made his village an army to fight against it. He also trained his family including his wife and children to take on the terrorists.
The Ministry of Defence awarded him Shaurya Chakra, which is a rare honor for a civilian.
Balwinder Singh used to have security protection with him because of the life threat to his life from the still active Khalistani groups. But last year the security was withdrawn on the recommendation of Tarn Taran police.
