Big Bazaar is getting fine ₹18,000 for charging high on carrying bags. Big bazaar store is been direct to pay a fine of Rs 18,000 for charging ₹12 and ₹48 for carrying bags from two city residents by the Chandigarh District Consumer Commission.
What do the Big Bazaar customers say?
On 3rd August 2019, Neha Sharma of sector 30 purchased items worth Rs 9881 from Big Bazaar store at Elante Mall Chandigarh. She is charge ₹48 for just two paper bags. She resisted to pay and asked the cashier to refund but they denied. Same way, Preeti Kalai is charge ₹12 each for two carry bags. These companies approached the District Consumer Commission and then filed three separate complaints regarding this.
Big bazaar pleaded that the consumers were charged for a valid reason as the same was displayed in the store as well and the complaint had consented to be given a carry bag for an additional charge.
Big bazaar store claimed that in response to a safe environment issue, they are also conscious about it so the store has awarded everyone through various advertisements on television as well as on newspapers, posters, and notices that the use of paper bags should be encouraged. Every customer is requested to carry their paper bags or a cloth bag and if anyone fails to do so then the store provides a paper bag with some additional charges.
Big bazaar told that every customer who buys anything from the store knows of this. After hearing all the arguments from the big bazaar store as well, the Chandigarh District Consumer Commission directed the store to refund the cost of the carry bags charged from the complainant (s) and to pay ₹100 to the respective complainants towards compensation of harassment and to deposit ₹5000 in the consumer legal aid account for each complaint.
