Can covid 19 cause sudden paralysis? 31 cases of GBS association with covid 19 reported.
The 19-year-old lives in New Delhi. The boy doesn’t have any chronic illness. However last week in the evening, the boy had difficulty climbing the staircase. And the next days, his hands and legs were paralysed so much that he was not able to walk even with the support.
The boy was then rushed to SGRH hospital by the family. On detailed investigation, the boy was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. GBS( Guillain Barre Syndrome) is a condition in which peripheral nerves are attacked by the immune system. Besides, antibodies against covid 19 were also detected. This means the bot was affected by the viral infection also.
Senior consultant of Internal Medicine at SGRH, Dr Atul Gogia said, “We found antibodies against Covid-19 in the patient’s cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It is possible that infection due to coronavirus triggered strong immune reactions leading to GBS.” Further, the doctor revealed that during admission, the boy could not breathe but he had no fever. Hence, the boy was put on a ventilator and was administered immunotherapy. He was put on a ventilator for a few weeks and when his condition improved, physiotherapy was done regularly.
Boy was admitted in the hospital for about one and a half months. He was then able to move his hands and legs and was then discharged. However, the doctors are not sure that after how long the boy will be able to stand on his own.
