New Delhi: For the first time in Indian aviation, a woman has becomes the CEO of an Indian carrier. The government has appointed Hardeep A De Singh to the top position for AI ( Air India’s) regional subsidiary Alliance Air Currently, Hardeep A De Singh is AI,s executive director of flight safety In place of Hardeep, Capt Nivedita Bhasin will be the new ED( FlightSafety) Nivedita Bhasin is one of AI’s most senior commanders who is currently flying Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Among Indian carriers, Air India has the highest ratio of women pilots. Hardeep Singh was the first woman pilot who was selected by Air India. She was selected in 1988. But due to some health issues, she was not able to fly. Nevertheless, she had been very active in in-flight safety. Further, Hardeep has headed the Indian Women Pilot Association. Many senior women commanders like Bhasin and captain Kshamta Bajpai are seen as role models.

Hardeep Singh to hold the charge of Alliance Air CEO post:

On Friday, AI CMD Rajiv Bansal issued an order and said that Hardeep A De Singh will hold the charge of Alliance Air CEO post till any further orders. Besides Singh, Nivedita Bhasin has also been asked to head several departments. Alliance Air will remain a PSU for now. It will not be sold off with Air India-AI Express- AISATS. 

The global average of women pilots is just 2-3 per cent. On the other hand, India has it at 10 per cent. The first woman commander in India was Captain Saudamani Deshmukh.
