In Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, a 20 -year-old Dalit woman was gang-raped and brutally tortured by four men two weeks ago. The victim died on Tuesday morning at a Delhi hospital.
On 14th September the victim was allegedly gang-raped by four upper-caste men of her village and she was also brutally tortured by them. After the incident, she was admitted to a district hospital with her spinal cord severely injured and slitted tongue along with multiple serious injuries. After her condition became critical she was then admitted to Aligarh hospital and later shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital where she counted her last breathe.
According to the police’s statement, the victim was dragged with her dupatta into a field and gang-raped.
On 14th September the victim was with her mother in a field nearby to cut grass for their cows but her mother was sitting 100 meters away from her. The victim’s mother said, “I could have saved her. I wish I wasn’t hard of hearing.”
Four upper caste men of the victim’s village have been arrested on the charges of gangrape and attempt to murder. All four of them have been also booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,3.
Sandeep, his uncle Ravi (35), and their friend Luv Kush were arrested after the victim accused them and gave a statement on 23rd September when she briefly regained consciousness.
The victim’s family has also alleged that Sandeep and his family had “always harassed Dalits in their area”. Nearly two decades ago, Sandeep’s grandfather had been booked under the SC/ST Act and served three months in prison for allegedly thrashing the victim’s grandfather over a petty issue.
Meanwhile, Praveen Kumar the District Magistrate of the Hathras district said on Tuesday that the family would be provided Rs. 10 lakh as an aid.
