‘Looped three-ring’ butterfly discovered after 61 years in Tripura

Tripura: Recently, a group of investigators rediscovered YPTHIMA WATSONI also known as looped three-ring butterfly, Ypthima Asterope, the African ringlet, the common three-ring, and the Indian butterfly. The phylum is Arthropoda. It was seen in Tripura, Phuldungei in Jampui Hills under the North Tripura District. It was last seen in 1958 in Manipur.

The Head of the Bureau of Lepidoptera conservation and Research unit of Wild Tripura Foundation, Suman Bhowmik, Sandip Malarer, and Atanu Bora performed the research. Wild Tripura foundation of Agartala is a government registered trust based in Tripura which has studied Lepidoptera, the species of Tripura.

Mr. Bhowmik asserted that looped three-ring butterfly or Ypthima watsoni belongs to the subfamily Styrene and family of Nymphalidae of insects. He supervised the initial analysis at various locales of Jampui Hills from 5th -7th August 2019.

The rediscovery is significant in the measurement of revamping the status and proportion of the butterfly fauna in Tripura. The researchers continuously examined the butterflies in North-East India to evaluate the prevailing population, proportion, prominence, and many more things.

This was distributed in Assam, Myanmar, and Thailand. It belongs to a species of Satyrinae butterfly which is found in most dry areas of Africa and Asia. The genus is Ypthima. This includes the following species also:-

Ypthima Affectata
Ypthima Akbar
Ypthima Albipuncta
Ypthima Ancus
Ypthima Antennata
Ypthima Arcota

Other than these there are many more belonging to this same species.
The wingspan is 30 – 40 mm in males and 32 – 38 mm in females. Adults are on a wing year-round with peaks in summer and Autumn in southern Africa. There is only one generation in one year.

The explored document has been broadcasted at the journal of entomology and zoology studies.
