On Friday, Google took down Paytm from its app installing app ‘Play store’ citing violations of its app store’s gambling policies.
As per the Google norms, it prohibits online casinos and other unregulated gambling apps that promote sports betting in the country and Paytm’s Umbrella app provides a breeding ground for the sporting betting in India.
From tomorrow that is 19th September the Indian Premier League (IPL), T20 is starting and this decision came a day before the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 as the country is cracking down the apps that promote online-sports betting.
One more reason to stay attached to the string is that Paytm is one of the major competitors of Google Pay in the Indian digital market.
How are you affected?
As the Google Play Store has taken down the app, any Paytm user who wants to install or update the app from the Store will no longer be able to do so, however, the users who are already using the app and have installed the app in their mobile phones will remain unaffected by this step.
Also, the app will be available for iPhone users on their app store.
Others apps of Paytm such as Paytm Money, PaytmMall, and so on will remain to be available on Google’s Play Store
What did Paytm say?
In a tweet, Paytm said: “Paytm Android app is temporarily unavailable on Google’s Play Store for new downloads or updates. It will be back very soon. All your money is completely safe, and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as normal.”
Other apps that went through the same action
Dream11, also the title sponsor of the IPL this year, has been taken down by Play Store as it allows the users to make actual money.
According to the sources, Google has also talked to Disney+ Hotstar and has asked the app to display warning notes before showing advertisements of fantasy sports apps.
