Karnataka transport department has decided that if a two-wheeler driver is caught riding without a helmet, then he will end losing his driving license for three months. Following Motor Vehicles (Amendment)Act,2019, if caught riding without a helmet then you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1000 along with the three-month suspension of the DL. However, the fine is now reduced to Rs 500 by the state.
Fine along with three month DL suspension in case of violation:
A transport department official said, “Two-wheelers are more vulnerable to road accidents. They will have to pay fine and face a three-month DL suspension in case of a violation.” Till September this year, 20.7 lakh cases were booked for helmetless riders in Bengaluru. A video conference was held on 14 October wherein the Supreme court-appointed committee recommended stringent action against violators.
Number of cases of helmetless riders constantly increasing in Bengaluru:
Presently, if you will be caught while drunk driving then your Driving License will be suspended for six months. Out of 1.6 crore registered two-wheelers in Karnataka, 60 lakh are in Bengaluru. In 2018, Bengaluru booked about 16.4 lakh cases against helmet less riders followed by 20.3 lakh in 2019. And this year till September, the cases increased to 20.7 lakh.
BR Ravikanthe Gowda, Bengaluru’s joint commissioner ( traffic) said, “This is a step towards making our roads safe for all.”
