On Wednesday, Delhi reported 5673 cases of an ongoing covid pandemic. And it amounts to the highest single-day increase in cases ever recorded in the city by a large margin. If we see the average of cases in Delhi in the past week then it has been reported as 4225 cases every day. This means that the trajectory has now surpassed the previous peak of 4174 cases in the last week.
The spike in covid 19 cases is worrying: Delhi to be in the danger zone, enhance RT-PCR tests:
Just at the beginning of the festive season came this rising case rate. Also, winter is expected to intensify the speed. Also, there is an increase in positivity rate as well. Out of every 10 samples that were tested on Monday, Nearly 1 sample tested positive. That means the positivity rate has been increased to 9.4%, the highest since September.
A rise in positivity rate suggests that a region of testing inadequately and hence, the virus is getting more prevalent. If a region’s testing programme is adequate then the positivity rate should drop to 5% or maybe below. Though the Delhi government is testing at near peak levels, it seems that it is not sufficient. On Wednesday, a total of 60,000 samples were tested.
In early September, Delhi resorted to Rapid antigen tests. Though rapid antigen tests give results in 15 minutes, there is a possibility that they can miss as many as half of the infected people. In fact, in Delhi, antigen tests constitute more than two-thirds of daily tests. And this heavy-handed use of antigen tests may have suppressed a much higher positivity rate.
RT-PCR is the gold standard molecular test. Though these are expensive and time-consuming, these tests will find the infection more significantly and in a better way.
