IPL 2020: West Indian cricketer Sunil Narine may have been out of the Trinbago Knight Riders playing XI in the finals of the CPL 2020, but former Australian batsman and Kolkata Knight Riders mentor David Hussey rates him as ‘arguably the best spinner’ in the T20 format.
Talking in an interview with PTI, the former Aussie all-rounder said, “Sunil Narine is the best T20 bowler in the world. Not just in T20s but in any format, he is one of the best players to have in the side. Fortunately, he is at Kolkata Knight Riders. We are sure he will be at his best self to play and handle the tough situations”.
Narine is Kolkata Knight Riders’ highest wicket-taker in the IPL history with a total of 122 wickets in 110 matches. The off-spinner who has come along after making his debut for KKR back in 2012, has settled pretty well into an all-rounder’s role in the squad for the past couple of seasons. He mostly opens the batting for KKR and tries to get his side off to a flying start. But David Hussey believes Narine’s main strength is bowling and he continues to be Kolkata Knight Riders’, go-to man.
“Narine will definitely be one of the bowlers to look up to whenever an opposition side has the upper hand during a match. I am sure he will win matches for us”, Hussey said of the off-spinner who took 10 wickets at an average of 34.70 in IPL 2019.
Sunil Narine has been part of the KKR squad since the 2012 season where he played an important part in the team winning its first-ever IPL trophy, a feat which KKR repeated in 2014.
Kolkata Knight Riders start their campaign when they face defending champions Mumbai Indians on September 23 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
