Indian actress Anushka Sharma was at the receiving end of social media hate and trolling once again because her husband and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli had a bad day at work against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Thursday.
The RCB captain dropped two easy catches of KXIP opener and skipper KL Rahul, who later went on to score 132 runs off 69 balls, as he became the first player to score a century in the Dream11 IPL 2020. His score of 132 also became the highest score ever by an Indian batsman in the history of the IPL. As a result, KL Rahul’s side scored a huge total of 206 runs for just 3 wickets. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore had a nightmarish start. Losing two batsmen in the first two overs, tons of weight were now on Kohli’s shoulders. The flamboyant skipper is undoubtedly one of the best in the business when it comes to run-chasing as he has proved many a times in his career. But he failed with the bat managing to score just 1 run off 5 deliveries. RCB’s scoreboard read 4 runs for 3 wickets and there was no way they could recover from there. In the end, RCB was all out for 109 runs which gave KXIP their first win in the Dream11 IPL 2020 by a huge margin of 97 runs.
But it wasn’t all glamourous on social media and definitely not for Kohli’s spouse. Like always, the sexist trolls in social media collectively tried to bully the Bollywood actress, which is nothing new for Anushka Sharma, who often gets hate whenever her husband fails on the field. The offensive fans also joked about Anushka Sharma’s pregnancy and that Virat wouldn’t deliver until his wife does. This wasn’t just limited to the vile fans, as Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, who sat in the commentary box spoke of the RCB skipper while passing a remark about Anushka Sharma. And now it appears to have infuriated many on social media.
Speaking about Virat Kohli’s performance in the first two games of the Dream11 IPL 2020, Gavaskar said, “Jo lockdown tha, inhone lgta hai khali Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai” (he has only faced Anushka’s balls in lockdown).
His choice of words was slammed by the power-couple’s fan following. However, this is not the first time Anushka Sharma had to face disgusting comments and hate for Kohli’s poor performance on the field. The Bollywood star has been called several names including ‘bad luck’ and ‘unlucky’ for Kohli or the Indian team in the past as if her dating and marrying the Indian captain had anything to do with his cricketing skills. Fortunately, there were some on social media who wanted to end the ugly chapter of sexist trolls. There were many tweets and posts on all social networking platforms in defence of Anushka and Kohli and slamming Sunil Gavaskar.
Back in 2015, after Kohli’s poor performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup, Anushka faced similar allegations. Kohli came in support for his then girlfriend on twitter and wrote, “Shame on those people that are having a go at Anushka for so long and showing negativity towards her. Shame on those people calling themselves fans. Shame on those who think they are educated. Shame on blaming and making fun of her when she has no control over what I do in the field. If there is anything she has done it has only motivated me and given me more positivity”.
Really, shame on the Indian Internet.
