He has a win percentage of 60.19%, captaining in 103 IPL games during his time at Deccan Chargers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. The ‘Hit’man won a total of 62 matches and lost 41 times. He has lifted the trophy a record 4 times making him the only captain in the league to do so.

M.S Dhoni

The legendary and most successful Indian captain is second only to Rohit Sharma in terms of lifting the IPL trophy with 3 IPL trophies under his belt. He has lead the Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants a staggering 174 times, which is an IPL record for most matches played as a captain. Dhoni won a total of 104 matches and lost 69 times. 1 game ended in no result.

Gautam Gambhir

Ever since he moved from the Delhi Daredevils, former Indian opener quickly changed Kolkata Knight Riders from being a mediocre cricket team to a tournament winning squad. Gambhir won two IPL trophies during his time in Kolkata, boasting a winning percentage of 54.69%. He has captained the franchise 128 times in the league, winning a total of 70 matches and losing 57 times.

Despite never winning the IPL, Virat Kohli‘s captaincy record and his decision making has made us include him in the list of most successful captains. With a win percentage of 45.45%, the Indian skipper has led Royal Challengers Bangalore in 110 games, winning a total of 50 matches and losing 56 times. He’s also been unlucky quite a few times in the last couple of seasons as 4 games ended in no result due to rain.

Australia’s legendary keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist won the IPL in 2009 as the skipper of the now disbanded Deccan Chargers Hyderabad. He then moved to Preity Zinta’s Kings XI Punjab. However, he couldn’t emulate the success of previous seasons. In total, he has led in 74 games, winning 35 times with a win percentage of 47.30%.
