IPL 2020 schedule updates: Full Fixtures out, MI vs CSK in opener

IPL 2020: India’s biggest festival is back! Two of the most successful IPL teams, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will take on each other in the tournament opener of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League on September 19 in Abu Dhabi, after BCCI announced its schedule on Sunday. MI and CSK are the two teams that played in the finals of the IPL 2019. It was the fourth time they met in the finals.
This year’s IPL will be played in three different venues in the UAE – Dubai will host 24 matches, followed by Abu Dhabi (20), and Sharjah (12). Although the finals will be played on November 10, BCCI is yet to announce the schedule for the play-off matches.
Dubai will host the 2nd match of IPL 2020 on Sunday when Delhi Capitals play against Kings XI Punjab, followed by the 3rd match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.
The 4th match will then shift to Sharjah on Tuesday, where Rajasthan Royals take on Chennai Super Kings.
Like all previous editions of the IPL, there will be 10 matches played on the same day – one starting at 3:30 PM IST/2:00 PM UAE and the other at 7:30 PM IST/6:00 PM UAE. All eight teams reached UAE much earlier than the tournament is scheduled to begin, to follow the strict quarantine protocols given by the BCCI.
There were doubts whether the IPL will start on-time, as last year runner-ups Chennai Super Kings had reported 13 Covid-19 cases among their staffs, including two cricketers. However, it cleared all doubts when CSK resumed training on Friday after clearing the final rounds of Covid-19 testing. Deepak Chahar and Ruturaja Gaikwad, the two CSK players tested positive were kept in isolation and didn’t train with the rest of the squad. They can only resume training once they test negative and clear further rounds of testing.

In 2009, IPL took place in South Africa due to general elections in India. Then in 2014, for the same reason, the first half of the tournament was played in the UAE. This will be the first time an entire season of the IPL takes place in the UAE due to the growing number of Coronavirus cases in India.
